2023 Mona Ruth Brickman Memorial Artists of the Year: BoogieREZ
BoogieREZ is a dynamic artist duo - made up of Riiisa Boogie and REZONES - that lives life to the fullest and is heavily inspired by the culture of hip-hop, as well as the people who cross their path on a daily basis. Their studio is a blend of music, photography, illustration, painting, graphic design, dance, fashion, and sculpture. Their works can be viewed in galleries and public spaces regionally as well as nationally.
Riiisa is a Japanese American artist who intricately weaves the essences of urban streets, nature, and the rhythms of dance into her artwork. Her pieces—a mix of textiles, nature, and abstract portraits—mirror the vibrancy of culture and the unique characters within.
REZONES is an artist whose journey began in the ‘80s with graffiti. REZONES' evolution in the art world took him from the streets to the screen. From graphic design to photography and video, his works reflect a life rich in experience, deeply influenced by his surroundings.
Since 2020, BoogieREZ has been heavily involved with Albany Center Gallery, being a #CapitalWalls muralist. Their involvement heightened this past year, in particular. They co-curated (with Truemaster and Robert Cooper) and showcased in ACG’s exhibit, “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: Celebrating 50 Years of Hip-Hop.” Additionally, they shared their New York City studio, located in the World Trade Center, with Albany students, giving them the remarkable opportunity to explore and understand their artwork, artistic process, and importance of the power of art. BoogieREZ’s impact on the local community has been notable and inspiring for all of us.
For BoogieREZ, “visual art is not just an expression but an essential pulse of existence.” They continually experiment and push boundaries in their craft. Beyond art itself, their work also reflects a profound desire to make a positive impact on others. Their mission is to “share our love of creativity and ill visuals with the world. To inspire, impact, and empower one another while having fun through our growth, challenges, and experiences.”
