2023 Les Urbach Lifetime Achievement Award: Attila & Kinga Zalavary
Originally from Budapest, Hungary, Attila Zalavary studied art and learned the art of framing in his home country before moving to New York City in the mid-1960’s, where he worked alongside his father in their Upper East Side framing and art restoration business. They did work for renowned artists such as Salvador Dali, famous musicians, actors, and local politicians.
In 1988, Attila left the City for Albany along with his partner in life, Kinga, an Albany native and fellow Hungarian, whom he had married 10 years earlier. Together, they opened the Plaza Poster Gallery at the Empire State Plaza, which they ran for 14 years. Later, they partnered with the Art Associates Gallery, eventually taking ownership.
Attila and Kinga have made a significant impact on the Arts in the Capital Region for more than 35 years. They gained recognition for providing top-tier framing and art conservation services, as well as supporting local artists by offering free exhibition space without commissions. They hosted monthly exhibitions (celebrating Women’s History Month and Black History Month) and featuring local artist groups such as the Fire House Group, Upstate Artists Guild, Colonie Art League, and photography.
Attila and Kinga, gentle and generous with their time, are also fierce advocates for the region’s artists. They are beloved figures in the local arts community. In the spirit of Albany Center Gallery founder, Les Urbach, who provided a space and opportunities for the region’s artists to gain recognition and respect, we are honored to recognize Attila and Kinga Zalavary for a lifetime of significant contributions to region’s artists and creative economy.
