2022 Dr. Joel Spiro Community Impact Award (2 of 2 awardees): Honest Weight Food Co-op
Honest Weight Food Co-op is Albany’s homegrown grocery store, committed to providing local, natural and organic produce and groceries for healthy living since 1976.
The Co-op also is a leader in forging and strengthening local partnerships that make a very real impact on our community. For the past several years, it has supported the Albany Center Gallery by providing nutritious food for its many youth programs. It also collaborates with schools, nonprofits and other groups, such as the Capital Region Vegan Network, Free Food Fridge Albany and the African American Cultural Center. This year, it expanded its reach by supporting chefs on the frontlines in Ukraine with various programs. It also regularly sponsors classes and workshops that attract a wide segment of the local community.
As Honest Weight Food Co-op’s community relations specialist, Amy Ellis, says, “It's impossible to list all of the ways the co-op's community action shows up across the Capital Region. We're out there working with so many fantastic organizations in so many ways, sometimes behind the scenes, and often front and center. These partnerships have been cultivated throughout our 46 years, and they continue to grow.”
She notes that the store’s programs and charitable contributions always prioritize hyper-local causes and organizations with roots in the Capital Region and Hudson Valley. “When we all care about supporting locals, the effect really multiplies,” she says.
