Words from the Artist Ramiro Davaro-Comas: "This piece is about my love for skateboarding and family, and is based on a photo I took of my son Otis with my partner Grace on our mini ramp in the backyard. Skateboarding has been a part of my life for the past 26 years and has helped me understand the world, find my place in it, give me identity and maintain a positive outlook on life. This painting is from a series called "Wooden Toys' which celebrates the friendships and relationships that are created through skateboarding. The multiple color blocks on the skin of the characters represent the vibrant and diverse community that is skateboarding. While skateboarding has been a staple of American culture, in the past 20 years skateboarding has become an incredibly diverse culture that has spread to almost every country in the world, helping kids create identity, become active and maintain hope."
Within Us is funded by Albany County’s American Rescue Plan grant (ARPA) awarded to Albany County Department of Mental Health, John D. Picotte Family Foundation, Cynthia Kim, and the RED Bookshelf Albany.
