T.E. Breitenbach, Then & Now: A Retrospective
Tags: Gallery News
We are excited and proud to present the solo exhibition T.E. Breitenbach: Then and Now from May 2 to June 20, 2014.
Breitenbach currently resides in Altamont with his wife, Debra. Breitenbach has achieved international notoriety for his oil paintings. His most popular works have been made widely visible through poster sales of Proverbidioms.
Albany Center Gallery’s upcoming retrospective will present new works from Breitenbach’s Proverbidioms series along with his continually growing oeuvre. This will include an understanding of the artist’s elaborate working processes which feature old master techniques and mediums. He emphasizes a particular component of his work, explaining that through the use of exaggeration and contrast, and a lack of surface texture, the paintings create an immersive and exciting environment.
After studying in Rome, Breitenbach became fascinated with the medieval paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and the 19th-century castles of King Ludwig of Bavaria. Upon his return, Breitenbach enthusiastically began work on his own castle in Altamont. Breitenbach’s ongoing castle project now houses his large collection of paintings, furniture, and metalwork, as well as a handcrafted harpsichord. All is being left in trust as a future museum, with the hope that other young artists will find inspiration there.
An opening reception for T. E. Breitenbach: Then and Now will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2, at Albany Center Gallery, 39 Columbia Street, Albany as part of the city’s 1st Friday event; the public is invited to attend. Other events and programming for the Breitenbach retrospective will be announced in the near future.
