April is Earth Month! Youth got in touch with their artistic side through the use of natural processes and materials. In this workshop, students learned how to create photographs with the sun, paper, and plants through the historical process of cyanotypes. Students walked away with a printed tote bag, paper prints, and practice in one of the first photographic methods which created beautifully unique blue images. Later on, they created their own paints from spices and food materials, making vibrant and natural watercolors. This workshop was great for lovers of art, science, history, and nature, and made the students reimagine how art can be made.
About Artist Mentor Sam: “I’m Sam Mackey, I’m a photographer and visual artist from Troy, NY. I focus mainly on street and concert photography, and love exploring the world around me and documenting moments of life through photos. I also enjoy drawing, painting, and creating multimedia pieces while experimenting with different materials and styles. After studying photojournalism at St. John’s University in Queens, NY, I spent two years teaching photography in New York City. Aside from art, my favorite things include music, cooking, and visiting new places.”
All youth between the ages of 13-18 are invited to attend. The workshops are free, but there is limited space in order to foster a proactive learning environment. Registration is REQUIRED. No prior knowledge or experience in the arts nor topic of specific workshops is necessary. Please include a valid email with registration, as we will be reaching out to you for sharing logistics and waiver details.
