2024 Dr. Joel Spiro Community Impact Award: Nick "Nicky Lightz" Nealon, in memoriam
Nick Nealon, or “Nicky Lightz” as many people knew him by, was a creative and community light. Nick was involved at every Albany Center Gallery Gala for the past 13 years. His dedicated service and volunteerism provided creative visuals, equipment, and technical support. Not only did he support ACG’s Galas and events, but Nick also brought his equipment and creative spirit to numerous art spaces here throughout the Capital Region and beyond. To name a few, he supported and provided his expertise for events and productions at Albany Barn, Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York, Confetti Stage, Creative License, Lark Hall, Opalka Gallery, Sanctuary for Independent Media, Troy Music Hall, and countless others. Many called him a “godsend” or “pillar” for the local arts and theater sector.
The work that Nick has done for the local community with his expertise, talent, and equipment significantly contributed to the growth of the theater and arts scene in the Capital Region. His ability to transform any space into welcoming and visually dynamic environments cannot go unnoticed. Prior to his community work, he was a school teacher of over 30 years at Bethlehem Central Schools.
With Albany Center Gallery, Nick created the Nicky Lightz Spotlight Award to give to photography artworks that were standout in their uses of light/shadow in the High School Regional and Photography Regional exhibitions. Albany Center Gallery will continue to have this award at these exhibits in his honor. His passion to not only uplift fellow artists in the Capital Region but also to inspire the next generation of young artists was admirable. Nick’s light and legacy will continue in all of us. Shine on, Nicky Lightz.
