Albany Center Gallery Announces New Downtown Location

New venue will further support the creative community and bring ‘more art everywhere’

ALBANY, NY (August 5, 2025) – Albany Center Gallery (ACG), a nonprofit art space and gallery showcasing local and regional artists for nearly half a century, announced today a key move from its location in the Arcade Building at 488 Broadway to a larger downtown Albany building. The new venue will accommodate and enhance Albany Center Gallery’s rapidly growing programs, staff, projects, and initiatives.

The new location, 48 North Pearl Street, owned by Jankow Companies, sits on the corner of Pine Street, two blocks west of ACG’s current building. ACG will occupy 6,600 square feet on the building’s first floor, with 4,100 square feet planned for flexible exhibition and youth art programming spaces – more than double the current usable gallery. The rest of the floor will feature offices, storage, a breakroom, and more.

“We’ve had an incredible eight years at the Arcade Building, but we’ve outgrown the space,” said Albany Center Gallery Executive Director Tony Iadicicco. “Fairbank Properties has been a tremendous partner throughout our time there, and while leaving a place that has served us so well wasn’t easy, we’re thrilled for what’s next. Staying rooted in downtown Albany – near cultural anchors like the Palace Theatre, MVP Arena, and the Alice Moore Black Arts & Cultural Center – keeps us connected to the heart of the community. Our new location offers room to grow, with expanded space for exhibitions, youth programs, meetings, and events. This move reflects the increasing demand for art and community engagement, made possible by the ongoing support we receive. A heartfelt thank you to Ryan Jankow and Jankow Companies for believing in our vision and helping bring it to life. And of course, deep gratitude to the artists, board of directors, our members, and everyone who continues to help make ‘more art everywhere’ a reality.”

The North Pearl Street location is close to the New York State Capitol and steps away from a host of restaurants, businesses, hotels, retail establishments, and other arts venues, making it an inviting creative hub. The larger space will strengthen Albany and the greater Capital Region by generating more opportunities for innovation, collaboration and conversation among artists, visitors and the public.

The new building will allow for the ability to display larger works, more artists, and more complex installations. It also will create increased street visibility and foot traffic, a larger youth art space and a working environment that enhances staff needs. In addition to Iadicicco, ACG currently has five employees and works with over 300 artists annually.

ACG holds an essential place in the region’s creative community, as an award-winning gallery but also as a welcoming arts space. Founded in 1977 by Les Urbach, a fierce advocate for upstate New York artists, ACG initially was housed in the Capital District Psychiatric Center. It moved several times around Downtown Albany, before finding the Arcade building in 2016.

“We are extremely grateful for the continuing support from our members, and from the wide array of corporate, government and foundation funding,” said ACG Board of Directors President Rita Papandrea. “Their generosity is a testament to their deep commitment to ACG’s future and to the importance of the visual arts as a key component of a thriving environment.”

“As Chair of the Facilities Committee of ACG, I am thrilled about this exciting move for ACG. It is a confirmation of the growth of ACG as an exhibition space for the diverse community of regional artists, as well as opportunities for ACG to expand their influence in the creative economy of the Capital Region,” said Annette Nanes, ACG Vice President & Facilities Chair.

"Thank you to the Albany Center Gallery, Tony Iadicicco, and the entire leadership team at ACG for their continued dedication to the City of Albany. We are so grateful you were able to find space that will keep you in our historic Downtown neighborhood and provide residents and visitors alike with a beautiful space that highlights the wonderful artists from our entire region. I also want to thank Jankow Companies and Ryan Jankow for their continued investment in our Capital City. Ryan has once again shown how important it is to combine both residential and commercial space to stimulate growth and 48 North Pearl Street is yet another example of that work in action,” said Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan.

"Albany Center Gallery is such an integral part of the fabric of Downtown, which is why we’re thrilled that ACG is renewing its commitment to the District—now with even more space to share free public art and experiences. Since 1977, ACG has been uplifting local creatives and educating the community through exhibitions, murals, youth programs, artist talks, and more. We couldn’t imagine downtown Albany without this important cornerstone. We’re grateful to Jankow Companies for their investment in this critical space, recognizing the value of the Gallery, and ensuring ACG continues to thrive in the heart of our city, and we are excited for Tony Iadicicco and his staff to expand on the incredible work they do for our community," said Georgette Steffens, Executive Director of the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District.

"Art, creativity in itself, is life. We need more art, more life, more safe spaces and more collaboration. ACG demonstrates what's possible when we all work together,” said "Batman" Paul Collins-Hackett of The RED Bookshelf.

“We are thrilled that this relocation has come to fruition for Albany Center Gallery, providing the organization with a larger, more flexible exhibit and programming space, while keeping them in Downtown Albany. With the major investments committed to the revitalization of downtown by Governor Kathy Hochul, this new ACG location will be yet another attraction contributing to the growing vibrancy of New York’s capital city,” said Jill Delaney, President & CEO, Discover Albany.

“Albany Center Gallery’s relocation and expansion reflects the continued evolution of our downtown and the demand for creative space,” said Capitalize Albany Corporation president and City of Albany Capital Resource Corporation CEO Ashley Mohl. "The Downtown Albany Retail Grant Program has proven to be an advantageous tool allowing local small businesses and organizations to expand and retain their presence in Downtown Albany. ACG’s commitment to staying downtown and growing within the district speaks to the strength of our creative economy and the importance of accessible public art in shaping a vibrant city.”

"Since 1977, Albany Center Gallery has helped Albany's vibrant arts community find a home and provided support to aspiring artists from across the Capital Region," said Senator Patricia Fahy. "They are a pillar and institution of our Capital City, and I could not be more thrilled to see them move into a larger, more accommodating space to account for their growing programming and impact. For every dollar our community invests in art, studies show that we generate $7 in economic return. Public art is a public good; and this expansion will ensure that Albany Center Gallery's mission in our community continues far into the future."

“I’m so thrilled to see the Albany Center Gallery announce its new location in downtown Albany,” said Assemblymember Gabriella A. Romero. “This new location will represent a significant step in Albany Center Gallery’s continued growth, supporting the expansion of its programs and projects, the strengthening of its team, and the advancement of initiatives that deepen its impact on the community. Congratulations on this remarkable milestone!”

“We’re excited to partner with Albany Center Gallery in its new space and look forward to watching it grow as a cornerstone of creativity, community and youth programming in our city,” said Ryan Jankow, President of Jankow Companies.

"Congratulations on this amazing new home for Albany Center Gallery! Thanks to Tony Iadicicco, director, the board, staff, volunteers, artists and all who have supported our city gallery since it began! It is remarkable for a gallery to survive for this long, but this gallery has thrived, embraced new ideas, been experimental, and served the arts community now for just three years shy of a half century! I look forward to the future of the gallery in this dazzling new space!" said Willie Marlowe, Artist.

ACG's relocation and expansion is made possible in part with support from the Downtown Albany Retail Grant Program. Jankow Companies' recent program grant award will support necessary interior renovations including electrical work. The grant program is made possible by the City of Albany Capital Resource Corporation and is administered by Capitalize Albany Corporation. The Downtown Albany Retail Grant Program supports downtown business attraction and retention.

ACG promotes and exhibits art produced by a range of emerging and established artists from throughout the greater Mohawk-Hudson region while also emphasizing its art education programs for local youth. And because of ACG’s firm belief that art should be accessible to everyone, all exhibitions, receptions and other events are free and open to the public.

Thousands of the area’s contemporary artists have exhibited their work across all mediums, including but not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking pieces, fiber arts, video, mixed media, and installations. In addition, ACG has made its presence felt through its public art mural programs and by providing consulting services for local businesses and schools, art and space rentals, pop-up shows, and other community events.

Official grand opening events will be announced at a later date. There are opportunities to invest and support regional arts with Albany Center Gallery, you can donate online here. For more information, contact Executive Director Tony Iadicicco at director@albanycentergallery.org.
