"Photography Regional Select" at Albany Center Gallery

Judging from the 2017 "Photography Regional Select," good old photography is still alive and well. But is that good news or bad?

Truth is, there is a lot of finely crafted work in this newest regional survey: careful portraits that speak volumes about the sitter (by Lindsey Sweeney), studies that create brooding textures (by Thomas Hansen) and a wonderful set of gaudy documentary views of cosmetic counters at the mall (by Jeff Lansing). There are pretty bits of neglected landscape (by Chris DeMarco) and trenchant observations about life and how we live (by Richard Tomasulo).

The best of this survey show is either keen, wild or subtle, with attention to seeing well and to making compelling prints. I'm sure it's not fair to tar the whole show by lamenting that it's all been done before, yet most of it does fit into familiar categories.
